One person was injured going back into a burning mobile home on the northeast side of Salem late Thursday night because he thought a 13-year-old girl was still inside.
Salem Fire Department Fire Marshal Bill Fulton says the girl later showed up on the scene after being at a friend’s home several blocks away.
The fire was at the Brittany Smith home at 1336 North Trenary. She had earlier left the home with two other daughters. Another resident Saul Bujanda had gotten out of the home but became concerned the 13-year-old may still be inside and went back to try and find her. In the process, he received smoke inhalation and was taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment.
After knocking down the fire in the kitchen, firemen did a room to room search of the home that ended when the girl showed up at the scene.
Fulton says while the fire was confined to the kitchen, the entire mobile home sustained heavy heat and smoke damage. The fire appears to have started on the floor near an island in the kitchen, but the exact cause has not been determined. The State Fire Marshal’s office was called in to assist in determining cause.
Salem Firemen received the call just after 11 Thursday night. They remained on the scene for three hours. Odin Firemen provided mutual aid on the scene. Kell Firemen stood by at the Salem Fire Station in the event of another fire.
