Three Injured in Crash on I-57 near Mt. Vernon

State Police say three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on I-57 a mile north of the I-64 split north of Mt. Vernon Wednesday night.

Preliminary investigative details indicate a pickup driven by 71-year-old Robert Bell of Vandalia was parked on the right shoulder of northbound I-57 facing the wrong way. Bell attempted to merge into the right lane and turn around and was struck by an SUV driven by 74-year-old Thomas Deien of Centralia. The Deien’s vehicle overturned on the driver’s side following impact.

Jefferson Rural Firemen were called to extricate both Deien and a passenger in his SUV, 58-year-old Brenda Deien of Centralia. Both were taken to SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of major injuries. Thomas Deien was later airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital.

Bell was taken to SSM Health Good Samaritan with minor injuries.

State Police report charges are still pending in the crash that occurred at 9:05 Wednesday night.
