Coffeyville started the pre-season ranked No. 4 and ended at No. 3, beating five NJCAA Top 25 teams along the way.
Winning 29 of 32 games — they lost at the buzzer to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (58-55), which is also in the Tournament. To the Kansas Jayhawk West/Region 6 champion Seward Saints (69-65) and on a neutral floor to Hutchinson in the Region 6 semifinals in 2 OT (94-89).
The Red Ravens finished with a 19-1 record in the tough Kansas Jayhawk Conference. Winners or 17 games in a row before losing to Hutchinson, Coach Jay Herkelman has had chances to leave Coffeyville for other jobs but didn’t.
“It’s a very good job at Coffeyville and one of the better junior college jobs in the country,” said Herkelman, who has 622 wins, 15 conference titles and 10 NJCAA Tournament appearances is in his 24th season at Coffeyville.
“I’ve always believed the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.”
The Red Ravens have outscored opponents 88.9 – 67.3 or about 23 points more per game with 40.2 rebounds per game.
Coffeyville is led by Marvin Johnson (6-6 sophomore guard) with 15.3 points per game in about 22 minutes. Tevin Brewer (5-8 sophomore guard) with 12 points per game in about 24 minutes.
