George R. Stover, age 80, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, died at 6:15 P.M. on Sunday May 12, 2019 at his residence in Mt. Vernon. George was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. He had worked as a baker in the family owned business, King’s Bakery in Mt. Vernon early in his career. Later, he worked for Dowzer Electric and retired from Royal Wholesale, both in Mt. Vernon. George enjoyed yard work and had a passion for helping other people. He loved and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held Wednesday May 15th from 5-7 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Funeral services will be held Thursday May 16th at 10:30 A.M. at Hughey Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Dietz officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Memorial contributions in George’s memory can be made to the donor’s choice and will be accepted at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon at any time.
On October 19, 1957 he married Linda D. Williams, and they were blessed with over 60 years of marriage. In addition to his wife Linda, also of Mt. Vernon, George is survived by his daughter: Kela Johnston and husband Raymond of Mt. Vernon, his son Mark Stover also of Mt. Vernon; 4 grandchildren: Lance Johnston of Lakeland, Florida; Bryan Johnston and wife Catherine of Lakeland, Florida; Emma Stover of Mt. Vernon and Gracie Stover of Mt. Vernon; 3 Great-Grandchildren: Sofia, J.J. and Lily.
He was born March 6, 1939 in Mt. Vernon the son of George H. Stover and Evalena (Haney) Stover. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather George King and 1 brother Gary Stover.
