Marion County Board receives update on courthouse improvements

The Marion County Board was told at Tuesday night’s meeting that the work on the third-floor ceiling of the large courtroom and the adjoining law library has been completed.

Building Committee Chair Dr. Creighton Engle says the water damaged plaster in the courtroom was repaired along with the decorative crown. The law library was also re-plastered. Engle says the work has sharpened up the third floor of the courthouse.

He reports they are now looking at needed exterior improvements. Engle says the most serious issue is tuckpointing the clay terra cotta above the main limestone to preserve it. He had hoped more outside work could be completed this year, but says due to the cost it may have to wait until next year.

The board awarded a $338,583 contract to Sierra Bravo to make repairs to a bridge on the Route 161 extension near the Wayne County line that has reduced the bridge to one-way traffic. The project will restore the bridge to two lanes. An engineering agreement with Rhutasel and Associates was approved at a cost not to exceed $46,000 to plan for replacement of a bridge near the Bethel-Community Beach Road intersection northeast of Centralia. Hutchison Engineering of Jacksonville Illinois was awarded a contract to complete an inventory of guardrails on the county highway system.

The board agreed to allow XT Solutions to immediately begin working on the sheriff’s department 911 system ahead of the July 1st start date of their computer security contract with the county. Engle noted the company was able to immediately solve some longstanding problems. They replace Maier Networks, which the county board earlier decided not to retain due to
complaints from county office holders.

The board appointed Resa Neff and David Coryell to the Board of Review. This will be Neff’s first term, while Coryell is being reappointed.
