Alva J. McKay, 89, of Scheller, Illinois passed away at 8:10 P.M. July 10, 2019 at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Alva proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, and worked as a farmer. He loved and was proud of his family, enjoyed playing cards and collected many things. He loved to stay active and was the former owner of the Waltonville Grain Co. Alva was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
A Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Sunday, July 14, 2019 at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, Illinois. The Funeral Service will begin at 3:00 P.M. with Deacon Mark Kabat officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser, Illinois. Members of the Mount Vernon American Legion Post #141 will conduct a Flag Presentation Ceremony at the cemetery. Alva is survived by his son, Ron McKay and wife, Donna of Ashley, Illinois; daughter, Gail Allison and husband, Jeff of North Augusta, South Carolina; daughter-in-law, Karen McKay of Pleasanton, California; eight grandchildren, Brad Allison, Mallory Westbrook and husband, Phillip, Tate McKay and fiancée, Carly McCrory, Tierney Moore and husband, Tyson, Alva McKay, Trent McKay and fiancée, Caitlin Hallock, Colin McKay, and Mollie McKay; step-granddaughter, Lucy Proudfoot; great-grandson, Tradd Westbrook; three sisters, Eloyce Barnhart, Joyce Jones, and Gladys Meador and husband, Al; sisters-in-law, Hilda Witges, Leone McKay, Kathy McKay, and Helen McKay; brother- and sister-in-law, Leo and Helen Witges; and several nieces and nephews.
He was born August 12, 1929 in Winona, Mississippi to the late John Alva and Mable (Fox) McKay. He married Dorothy Florence Witges on July 14, 1956 in Saint Louis, Missouri and she preceded him in death on January 7, 2011. In addition to his parents and beloved wife of fifty-four years, Mr. McKay was preceded in death by his son, Keith McKay; brothers, Ray McKay, Gene McKay, Bill McKay, Glen McKay; sisters, Ethel Jones, Hazel McKay, and Freeda Dodd.
