Bessie Viola Thorne, age 81, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 12:00 A.M. July 21, 2019, at her residence in Texico, Illinois.   Bessie worked for a time as a laborer in a Candy Plant and also a Pickle Plant, but enjoyed raising her children as a devoted homemaker.  Mrs. Thorne was a member of The Church of Mount Vernon.  She was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, July 25, 2019, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Pastor David Houseworth officiating. She was born December 29, 1937, in Matoaka, West Virginia to the late Samuel Carl and Susie (Shuler) Rutledge. She married Elmer Wayne Thorne on June 24, 1954, in Matoaka, West Virginia and he survives in Texico.

In addition to her beloved husband of sixty-five years, Bessie is survived by her two sons, Jimmy Elmer Thorne and wife, Sheri Lynn of Mechanicsville, Virginia and Michael Wayne Thorne and wife, Kelly of Williamsburg, Virginia; daughter, Anita Carol Thorne Robinson and husband, Kelly of Texico; eight grandchildren, Arthur Wayne Derrenbacker and wife, Jennifer of South Hill, Virginia, Jerry Sylvester Ashley, Jr. and wife, Melody of South Hill, Virginia, Crystal Gail Webster and husband, Chris of Mount Vernon, Kelly Wayne Robinson and wife, Angie of Texico, Lisa Marie Lambrecht and husband, Richard of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Michael Wayne Thorne, III and wife, Michelle of Gatesville, North Carolina, Jimmy Elmer Thorne, Jr. and wife, Amanda of Mechanicsville, Virginia, and Charles Dylan Thorne and wife, Emily of Lunenburg, Virginia; nineteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Gay Green and husband, Tom of Meadow Bridge, West Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thorne was preceded in death by her daughter, Janet Sue Thorne-Martin; brothers, Harold Rutledge and Jackie Lee Rutledge; sisters, Margaret Woods, Dorothy Shrewbury, Carrie Mae Underwood, Ennis Boyd, Mary White, and Eva Boyd; and infant sister, Evelyn Rutledge.
