Maurice Davis, 97, of Mt. Vernon, IL, passed away at 4:11 p.m. on Monday, September 9, 2019, at his home. Maurice served our country with 319th Aero Squadron in depo repair based in northern Africa and Foggia, Italy, during WWII repairing damaged B17 and the B29 aircraft. His experience in the Air Force will always be cherished. He raised livestock and farmed well into his late 80s on their farm that had been in the family over 100 years. Having grown up farming with horses and mules, he continued to ride, use, and enjoy horses with his family into his 90s. He was a Christian, and he and Doris enjoyed life with the church family of Mt. Vernon Church of Christ.
Visitation will be held at the Mt. Vernon Church of Christ, located at 4304 Ilbery Road (turn west at Casey’s off of 42nd St.), Mt. Vernon, IL. from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 12. Graveside services will be conducted at the South Hickory Hill Cemetery on Friday, September 13, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Mt. Vernon Church of Christ, or to South Hickory Hill Cemetery. They will be accepted at the Rankin Funeral Home in Salem.
Maurice married Doris Wooden on May 2, 1957, and has been blessed with 62 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, Doris, Maurice is survived by his children, Marilyn Davis of Mt. Vernon, Nancy Voyda and husband Tim of Waterloo, Linda Kirkpatrick and husband Billy, John Davis and his wife JoAnne, Susan Guthrie and husband Shannon, all of Mt. Vernon. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sarah Ruth. Surviving grandchildren, Jessica (Bryan) Stumpf of Valmeyer, Matthew Voyda of Waterloo, David (Brittney) Voyda of Columbia, Jordan (Samantha) Kirkpatrick, Bethany (Ross) Heern, Moriah (fiancé Josh Gentry), John Michael Davis, Joseph Davis, Kate Davis, Canaan Guthrie, Eden Guthrie, Benjamin Guthrie. Great-grandchildren, Jackson, Emma Kirkpatrick, Maurice, Gwen William, Oliver, Brandon Stumpf, Evan Voyda, Cade Heern.
He was born December 29, 1921, in Mt. Vernon, son of Joe and Gertie Davis, who preceded him. Maurice was also preceded in death by his brother, Donald; and sister-in-law, Ruth Davis, brother-in-law, Harold Stewart. He is survived by his sister, Dixie; and brothers-in-law, Bill Wilson and Jerry Wooden; and sisters-in-law, Emma (Dean) Clayton, and Judy Stewart; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
