Two car-school bus crash injures Flora man

A 22-year-old Flora man was among two people taken to the hospital after a school bus crashed into the rear of a vehicle he was passenger late Wednesday afternoon on Illinois Route 4 at the entrance ramp to Interstate 70 westbound near St. Jacob.

State Police say Briano Gutierez of Flora was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Sara Kirksey of Highland that had stopped on northbound Illinois Route 4 to make a left turn onto westbound I-70 that was struck by a school bus that could not stop in time. The impact pushed the Kirksey vehicle into oncoming traffic and sideswiped an SUV traveling southbound on Illinois Route 4 driven by 31-year-old Kyle Kampwerth of Beckemeyer.

The bus driver, 47-year-old Martha Kay Lawhorn of St. Jacob, refused medical treatment. None of the children on the bus were injured. Both Kirksey and Gutierrez were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Kampwerth refused medical attention.

The bus driver was ticketed for failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash. The crash occurred at 4:48 Wednesday afternoon.
