Centralia City Council approves lease to bring Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Office to city

The Centralia City Council has approved a lease agreement to allow the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs to use a portion of the second floor of the old city hall as their new regional office.

The State will pay $400 per month for the space that was the former Mayor’s office. The one year lease is set to begin July 1st.

The council approved beginning work to get six more substandard homes in the community torn down. They are at 1011 South Marion, 218 East 6th, 336 South Walnut and at 410, 414, and 416 South Walnut.

The council finalized the sale of a small parcel of land adjacent to 326 South Locust to the only bidder. Jim Rockett owns adjacent property and will utilize the land for his business.

Connie Deadmond told the council during public comment that she would like to see the city address the problems with dead trees and tree limbs that fall during strong winds and storms. She reports have one car totaled as a result of a falling limb.

Acting City Manager Bill Agee said he would address the issue when Public Works Director Jeff Schwartz returns to work.
