Centralia woman allegedly strikes Centralia Policeman investigating hit and run crash

A 48-year-old Centralia woman was formally charged in Marion County Court Monday with aggravated battery to a police officer.

Melissa Wheritt of Overbeck Drive is accused of striking the hand of a Centralia Police Officer as he was investigating a hit and run crash.

Wheritt had reportedly left the scene of a non-injury crash on East McCord on Saturday night. With the information obtained by witnesses, that indicated Wherritt’s car was involved, an officer went to her home. When she reportedly refused to give info about the wreck and issues with the vehicle registration, the officer began to make preparations to tow the car. At that point, Wheritt allegedly slapped the officer across the face.

Bond on the charge was set at $7,500. The public defender was appointed to represent her. A preliminary hearing was set for February 11th.
