Tractor catches fire in pole barn in rural Salem

By News Jan 9, 2021 | 5:24 PM

Salem Firemen say an electrical malfunction apparently started a fire in a tractor that was being repaired in a pole barn south of Salem late Friday afternoon.

Firemen were called to the Steve Felgenhauer property at 3303 South College Street Road after the fire broke out.   There was concern the fire could spread to some nearby fuel stored in the barn, but the blaze was knocked down before it could spread that far.

Firemen report significant damage to the tractor.  The fire did spread to some surrounding materials and some insulation in the barn.   There was also smoke damage throughout the building.  There was no structural damage.

The fire call came in at 4:38 Friday afternoon with firemen on the scene about an hour and a half.

Salem Firemen had Odin Firemen stand by at the Salem fire station in the event of another fire.   Kinmundy-Alma Firemen were initially called but were canceled when the fire was quickly knocked down.
