Sandoval School Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Garrison is proud of several accomplishments the district was able to achieve during her nine-year tenure.

Garrison announced Thursday she will be leaving the post effective April 2nd to become Superintendent of Vandalia Schools.

"I've been at Sandoval for 9 years and when the board first hired me they were looking for a leader to increase student outcomes, increase community support, and we've received several large grants throughout the school year. And I am happy to report that our 3rd through 8th-grade scores are currently at the state average. So going from lowest performing to state-average has always been our goal, and now its to maintain that going forward."

Garrison says the financially strapped school district should be seeing better times ahead with the new school funding plan adopted by the legislature last year. She was one of the leaders of the coalition that successfully pushed the reform.

Garrison notes a meeting on a long-term plan was held in January to look at what the community wanted to bring back that has been cut over the years.

"They are looking for an early interventionist for the primary grades. More teaching staff in general and bringing back transportation for extracurriculars."

Garrison lives in Vandalia and is a 1995 Vandalia High School Graduate so her new position is a chance to give back to her hometown. She notes her own child will be starting kindergarten at Vandalia next year.

Garrison replaces Rich Well who resigned immediately for personal reasons in November after earlier announcing he planned to step down at the end of the year.

Garrison says Sandoval is a great community and she will miss the staff and students.

She reports an effort is now underway to find an interim superintendent to finish out the school year. Garrison expects an appointment to be made at the regular school board meeting at the end of the month.
