Leroy Dees, 93, of Zeigler, Illinois passed away at 9:15 P.M. August 20, 2019 at his residence. He was born October 15, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Baron and Irene (Nelson) Dees. Leroy proudly served his country in the United States Army in World War II. He worked as a Stone Mason for many years and later as a coal miner at the Rend Lake Inland Steel Site. He was a member of the UMWA Local 1545, the Sesser-Goode Lodge #744 A.F. &A.M., and the Sesser Veterans of Foreign Wars Cox Post #4753. Leroy was an avid fisherman and fan of the Saint Louis Cardinals. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

A Visitation will be held 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, August 23, 2019 at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, Illinois. A Masonic Service will be held beginning at 7:30 P.M. the evening of the visitation. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville with Harl Ray Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Valier, Illinois and members of the Sesser VFW Post #4753 will conduct Full Military Honors at the cemetery. In addition to his wife, Leroy is survived by his son, Terry Dees and wife, Maggie of Waltonville; two daughters, Syble “Rene” Dees of Clarksville, Tennessee and Kathryn “Kathy” Young and husband, Roger of Valier; six grandchildren, Donald Dees and wife Kimberly of Clarksville, Tennessee, April Morales and husband, Harry of Johnston City, Christopher Pitts and wife, Sharon of Clarksville, Tennessee, Kerri Reidelberger and husband, Travis of Waltonville, Michael Richardson of Christopher, and Kelly Jo Dees of Waltonville; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Debra McGovern and husband, Dave of Williamsburg, Virginia, Ronald Graham and wife, Deborah of Richmond, Virginia, Susan Richardson and husband, Howard of Edwardsville; twelve step-grandchildren; seventeen step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was first married to Joan Isom in July of 1946 and she preceded him in death in 2004. He later married Phyllis Hartley on March 23, 2005 and she survives in Zeigler. In addition to his first wife and parents, Mr. Dees was preceded in death by his son, Donald Dees; brother, Don Dees; sister, Janice Stelmajewski; and stepson, Max Allen Graham.
