The Illinois State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Effingham County on Interstate 70 eastbound at milepost 81.
According to police reports a 2019 Ford passenger car, 2013 Dodge Ram pickup and a 2020 Freightliner tractor semi-trailer were stopped in the right lane of traffic Eastbound on I-70 due to traffic backed up before a construction zone when a pickup driven by 69-year-old Billy Barksdale of Gene Autry, Oklahoma ran into the rear end of the first vehicle driven by 68-year-old James Barnes Jr of Lawrenceville Georgia.
Barnes vehicle was then shoved into the rear of a vehicle driven by 31-year-old Stephen Long of Saint Thomas, Pennsylvania. That unit was then shoved into the rear of the tractor/trailer.
Barnes was pronounced deceased on scene by the Effingham County Coroner. Barksdale was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash.
The accident occurred at 3:51 pm on Sunday afternoon.
