Vacant home destroyed by fire in Mt. Vernon

Mt. Vernon firemen say the cause of a fire that destroyed a vacant home early Friday morning is suspicious in nature.

Firemen say a neighbor reported the fire at 700 South 18th Street after hearing an explosion and spotting the fire around 12:30 am. Fire was showing from the upper story of the one and a half story home when firemen arrived. The blaze spread throughout the structure and a portion of the roof caved in.

The ownership of the home was not immediately available. The State Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to investigate.

There was another home about 30 feet away, but firemen were able to keep the fire from spreading and since the fire had vented through the roof the radiant heat mostly went up instead of out the sides of the home.

Jefferson Rural Firemen provided mutual aid assistance.

Firemen were on the scene until around three Friday morning.
