IDOT employee injured when hit by car on I-57 south of Edgewood

An IDOT employee was struck by a car that lost control on a slick area of I-57 a mile south of Edgewood early Friday night.

State Police say 55-year-old James Denton of Effingham was putting flares on the roadway to warn motorists of a crash in the roadway ahead when a car drove by 64-year-old Patrick Grauenke of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin lost control and went off the right side of the roadway.  Grauenke was driving over a hill and bridge at the time.  His vehicle struck Denton’s legs and the guardrail.

Denton saw the car lose control, ran, and jumped over the guardrail.  He received only minor injuries from being struck.    Neither Grauenke or Denton required hospital treatment.

Grauenke was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

The crash occurred at 6:36 Friday evening.
