Nashville Knocks Off Mater Dei In NIT Final…Saturday Scoreboard

Nashville’s Terry Pelczynski hits a go-ahead three-pointer with 54 seconds left as the Hornets slip past the Breese Mater Dei Knights 41-39 in Saturday’s championship game of the Nashville Invitational Tournament. The Knights knocked off Nashville 47-44 in the championship game of the Breese Mater Dei Christmas Tournament Dec. 30.
Knights raced out to a 13-2 lead in the first four and a half minutes, but Nashville outscored Breese Mater Dei 18-4 the remainder of the first half and took a 20-17 lead into halftime. Part of that run included a three-pointer from the opposite free throw line at the first quarter buzzer by Nashville’s Tristen Hercules, which reduced Breese Mater Dei’s lead to 15-10. Twice the Knights pulled even in the third quarter, but Nashville moved back in front with a 7-0 run and still owned a 35-29 advantage at the end of the period.
Grant Goebel keyed a 10-0 run by the Knights in the fourth quarter with a pair of buckets and a go-ahead three-pointer with 5:23 left that gave Breese Mater Dei a 39-37 advantage. The Knights did not score the rest of the way.
After the Hornets moved back in front Breese Mater Dei had three cracks at the basket in the final 25 seconds including a pair in the final ten seconds. All three missed the mark.
Caleb Zurliene scored 11 points to lead the Knights, while Jacob Schadegg and Goebel had ten. Breese Mater Dei falls to 17-5 on the season. It was the Knights first loss this season to an Illinois school. Breese Mater Dei is home against Madison Tuesday.
Caleb Zurliene, Mitchell Haake and Jacob Schadegg represented Breese Mater Dei on the all-tournament team.
