This week is all about grain bin safety and the dangers they present to farmers.
State Representative Dan Brady is the sponsor of House Resolution 621, which declares February 16th through the 22nd Grain Bin Safety Week in Illinois.
Brady says farmworkers risk their lives when they enter large grain bins.
“We use this historically to remind farmers and the entire agriculture industry that the accidents and tragic fatalities have occurred in farm bins from over the years. And its a reminder to agriculture of how important they are to this state and this country, but to be aware of the dangers that lurk.”
According to researchers at Purdue University, more than 900 cases of grain engulfment have been reported with a fatality rate of 62 percent in the past 50 years.
