Amidst the pandemic, the state unemployment rate jumped to 16.4% last month.
Illinois Department of Employment spokesperson Sam Salustro says April’s rate rose over 12% from March, as businesses had to close because of the coronavirus. He reports more than 762,000 jobs were lost last month.
“As anyone can guess the sectors hit hardest was the leisure and hospitality industries as we have seen a decrease in food and drink establishment retail and hospitality retail. We also saw decreases in professional and business services and trade and transportation.”
Salustro says 300,000 of the layoffs are from the leisure and hospitality industry.
“We also announced today that we have processed 1.2 million claims since March that is a rate 10 times higher than at any time last year.”
