2020 11/30 – Gino Philip Federici

Gino Philip Federici, 83, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 6:55 am November 26, 2020, at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon.

Gino grew up in Oak Lawn, Illinois, and graduated from Carl Sandburg H.S. in Orland Park Illinois.  He graduated from Kemper Military School, and also from Drake University, where he met his wife Molly.  Gino proudly served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1966.  He founded Milano Metals and Recycling (formerly Shapiro Bros. of IL) in Mt. Vernon, which he owned and operated for over 50 years.  Gino was a member of Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Mt. Vernon Rotary Club, was a counselor at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, as well as a member of ISRI (Institute of Scrap Recycling Industry).  Gino had a great love of life, and had many interests including reading, playing piano, horses, sailing, the arts, playing cards, and attending his grandchildren’s many athletic, music, and theater events.  He especially loved cooking and sharing his kitchen with a great many friends and family.  He attended many culinary schools throughout the US, Italy, and France.  He adored and focused all his energy on family; here in the US as well as in Milan and Rome.  He was the heart and soul of the Federici family and will be fondly and fiercely remembered by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mt. Vernon at a later date.  Memorials may be made in Gino’s honor to Saint Mary’s School, Mt. Gino was born June 27, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois to immigrant parents, the late Anthony Simon and Mary Catherine (Missio) Federici.  In addition to his parents, Gino was preceded in death by his sister, Eda Sciacqua.

Gino married Loretta “Molly” Marie (Shapiro) Federici on July 1, 1961, in Festus, Missouri and she survives in Mount Vernon.

In addition to his beloved wife of nearly sixty years, Gino is survived by three daughters, Toni Cusumano and husband Jeff, Mary Burgan and husband Hal, and Mia Barker and husband Chris, all of Mt. Vernon; son, Michael Federici of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren, Anthony Burgan, Ava Barker, Anderson Barker, Sophia Cusumano, Molly Federici, and Maggie Federici; sister, Mary Lou Pitcher and husband Tom, of Gig Harbor, Washington; and many nieces and nephews.
