Detached garage destroyed by fire in rural Odin

Flames shoot from a detached garage at the Dwayne Hunter home at 1748 Red Stripe Road in rural Odin Friday evening.

A detached garage at the Dwayne Hunter home at 1748 Red Stripe Road west of Odin was destroyed in a Friday night fire.

Odin Fire Chief Greg Smith says the pole barn type structure already had heavy fire showing from the roof and one wall had been breached upon their arrival.   He reports their immediate goal was to keep the fire from spreading to another pole barn about 20 feet away.   Smith says they were successful, running out of water carried on their two trucks just as the fire was put out.

Odin Firemen had called Salem and Sandoval Firemen to bring more water which was used to make sure the fire was completely out.  The Centralia Fire District was at the Odin Fire Station in the event of another fire.

Smith believes the fire started from a wood-burning stove in the garage, but the State Fire Marshal’s office was called to further investigate.

In addition to the building being a total loss, Smith says $30,000 to $40,000 worth of items stored in the garage were lost.   That included a few motorcycles, tools, and welding supplies.

The fire call came in at 7:18 Friday night.  Firemen were on the scene until about nine pm.

The Hunter family was home and discovered the fire.   No injuries were reported.
