Centralia City Council agrees to suspension of cutoffs on small utility bills

The Centralia City Council has decided not to suspend service for those overdue on small utility bills through at least the end of March.

Councilman David Sauer spoke for the moratorium.

“We should not be shutting off small water bills for residences, in the middle of winter, when the COVID problem seems to be coming to an end.  It’s not a forgiveness, it’s temporary suspension of shutoffs so they cannot be used as a collection tools on small accounts.  I think that’s something appropriate to do for our citizens.”

The suspension is for those who have not had prior delinquency problems and for bills under $200.

City Manager Lowell Crow says the moratorium could be extended for a longer period of time in the future.
