Selmaville School sports to be played without fans

By News Jan 27, 2021 | 8:40 AM

Selmaville Grade School Superintendent Robin Brooks says when sports resume next week there will be no fans allowed.

While fans are possible in junior high games, Brooks says there is a requirement they be at least 30 feet away from the playing floor and there is no way to accomplish that in the Selmaville Gym.

He reports boys basketball and girls volleyball will be played starting next week. The school district will be able to provide video broadcasts of the game with play-by-play as a result of volunteer efforts. Parent Mark Lee is providing equipment and Josh Tate is volunteering to be the play by play announcer. A link to the broadcasts will be provided later.

Brooks reported the next round of federal COVID relief for schools will allow for improvements to HVAC systems and air purification. He notes while their system is fairly new, the district architect will review the system to determine if any improvements could be made. The money can also be used for additional technology improvements, but he reports the district is in good shape in that area. Preliminary figures indicate the district could be eligible for $116,000 in COVID grant funding.

The Selmaville Grade School has 18 students on full remote starting the second semester. No teachers are out and only four students are temporarily on remote learning due to being a COVID close contact.
