2021 04/09 – Robert Gene Coats

Robert Gene Coats, 88, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 10:53 am April 5 2021 at his residence in Mount Vernon, Il. Mr. Coats proudly served his country in the United States army during the Korean War. He was a member and deacon at Park Avenue Baptist Church and was an active Gideon member. Mr. Coats taught at Mt. Vernon Township High School, where his building trades program produced many homes in the Mt. Vernon area. He loved playing his guitar and singing and performing western and gospel songs. He also loved home remodeling projects and doing community volunteer work.

A Visitation will be held Friday, April 9, 2021 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Park Avenue Baptist Church in Mt Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm. Memorial may be made in Robert’s honor to Gideons International or Park Avenue Baptist Church. His burial will be in Wolford Cemetery at Clara Baptist Church in Houston, MO at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 10. 2021. Please remember to observe social distancing at this time. In addition to he lovely wife, Robert is survived by his son, Mark Coats of Mount Vernon Il, Debbie Coats of Salida, Co; brother Kenneth Coats and wife, Mary Jane of Houston, Missouri; sister, Suzy Hoover of Houston, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born September 11, 1932 in Houston, Missouri to the late Hershel and Fern (Crawford) Coats. Robert married Eleanor (Johnson) Coats in Denver in Colorado on June 20, 1964. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his son, James Coats; and brothers Donald Coats and Keith Coats.
