The Centralia City Grade School Board Tuesday night learned federal COVID-19 relief money will fund summer school, new learning devices, and building improvements.

Superintendent Craig Clark says 150 are expected to attend summer school to avoid being held back.   He reports many of them have been assigned as full remote learners but have had truancy issues and have been off the radar as far as checking in and completing assignments.

The summer school program will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday beginning June 8th for six weeks.   Clark says with the help of the federal stimulus grant, summer school staff will be paid 50-percent more than during the regular school year.

Other plans for the federal money include upgrading projectors and new “Promethean” advanced smart boards in all district education centers.   Clark says the updated technology will offer better learning opportunities.

The money will also pay for new carpeting, ceiling tiles, more up to code playground equipment, and other building amenities.

The board also received an update from Lunsford Architects on the blueprints for the Schiller School expansion project that will include the construction of a large multi-purpose room.

The board accepted the resignation of Dr. Sarah Epplin as Special Education Coordinator.

The board also approved a number of hirings:

  • Mrs. Brooklyn Simonton as 5th grade Special Ed. Cross Cat Teacher
  • Ms. Lindsey Huge as First-grade teacher at Schiller
  • Mr. Reuben Hill as Eighth-Grade track coach
  • Mrs. Stephani Isaak as Jordan/Schiller School Title I Paraprofessional
  • Mrs. Erica Trone as Jordan School Secretary
  • Mr. Michael Garner as District Food Service Director
  • Mrs. Theresa Lewis as Bus Monitor
