Clinton County still without new Sheriff as board votes down current Albers Police Chief

On a split 8 to 6 vote, the Clinton County Board Tuesday night voted down Albers Police Chief Brian Vielweber as the new sheriff to replace Doug Maue after he resigns on May 27th.

While Vielweber’s name was brought before the county board, the outgoing sheriff favors the appointment of his acting Chief Deputy Dan Travious for the job.

Whatever happens next will be guided by the county board chair. If no decision is made at the May meeting, the county board will have 60 days to fill the vacancy after Maue leaves office.

The Clinton County Board voted to stay with the current 15 member makeup when redistricting is completed after the results of the 2020 US Census are received. Board member Dennis Middendorff led the effort for change, but only got two other votes. The county board then unanimously voted to keep five county board districts.
